Finding information

Developing information

Presenting Combined information

Read through the template / example documents in the shared area. Now create IN YOUR OWN WORDS a plan for Activity 2 – the University Budget. This document should be saved in a new folder called ACTIVITY 2 – UNIVERSITY BUDGET in your KEY SKILLS 3 folder.

TASK 2 Searching for Budget Information - DEADLINE 4th MARCH 2011. (LUCY A and BINA)

The information that you include in your budget could come from many different sources. It could include;

information found on websites

information found in a university prospectus (non-ict)

information found in books (non-ict)

“A Guide to financial Support for Higher Education Students” (non-ict, found in the IT Room)

Finding information for your leaflet is a good opportunity to make use of non-ict sources, at least one non-ict source should be included in your portfolio. Take photocopies or scan relevant non-ict sources.

You need to take a screen shot of searches you make to find information for your budget. These searches should be multiple criteria searches separated by quotes “” plus “and”. For example, to look for information about available grants at university the search would be;
“University” and “Undergraduate” and “grants”

Take screenshots of your search results

Also, take screenshots of the actual websites and information found on webpages that you will actually use in your budget – you do not have to do this for every piece of information but make sure there is at least one example.

Task 3 - Development of number – DEADLINE 1st APRIL 2011. (BINA, LUCY A, ELLIE, LAUREN, IMMY, ALICE D, LORNA and IZZY). (Only the CHARTS – HARRIET and LILY)

3 Printouts;

A finished spreadsheet which displays formulas, grid lines and row and column headings. Click here to find out how

A finished spreadsheet which displays the results as normal

Starter: Wordwall

Task 1 – Continuing with your console presentation

Using the link I sent you by email last lesson, please continue to work on the console comparison presentation. Remember to complete your section of the comparison table at the start of the presentation.

Task 2 – Preparing a radio show

In tomorrow’s lesson you are going to plan, produce and present a short radio show which will compare the different consoles you have been looking at.

Each group will need to prepare a script which is no more than 4 minutes long and involves 3 people speaking (one member from each group will be needed to man the presenting software and mixing desk).

You also need to write an introduction for the whole show – we will then choose the best one to start with.

You will also need to choose some suitable theme music for your section – you will need to talk over this so choose carefully. Baking tracks and jingles can be found in; M:\Audio\General Access (Read Only)\Audacity\Sound Effects\Jingles or M:\Audio\General Access (Read Only)\backtracks – let me know what you are going to use so I can import it into the system if necessary.

Starter: Countdown

Task 1 – Adding buttons to your form

Open your Time Machine database and the form you created a couple of weeks ago. Now have a look at this video which is about adding command buttons to your form. After watching it, try adding some appropriate buttons to your form – adding a new record and moving backwards and forwards between records would be useful buttons.

Task 2 – Parameter Queries

After the demonstration, please use the query design sheet to design the queries required. You can then create your queries in the database and test them to see if they work correctly.

Task 3 – Creating Reports

Queries are great for finding information but there are not many presentation options.

Creating a report based on a query or a table means that;

logos can be added

font styles, sizes and colours can be changed

other formatting such as lines and shading can be added

after the demonstration create reports for the queries you have created today – make sure they look similar in terms of layout, colours and they include a logo.

Extension – creating a menu form

Can you create a blank form which will function as a menu.

There should be a title, a logo and then buttons which will give quick access to the form and reports in your database. There might even be a button to close the database….

9.3 Lesson 7 Time Machine – Building Forms and Parameter Queries

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In today’s lesson you will learn how to;

Create and refine a form in a database.

Create parameter queries.

Task 1 Insert a Form and Refine it in Design View.

Create a form using the Wizard. Click on Forms in the Database window and choose Create form by using wizard. Add all the fields by clicking on the double arrow icon. Follow the steps through the Wizard to choose layout and style, and then click Finish.

Once you have created a basic form, you can open it in Design View and reposition objects as necessary. You will probably have to experiment with moving the boxes, as it can be quite tricky! Click on objects and then use the black handles to move and resize boxes.

Task 2 Format a Form.

You can add formatting elements to your form, such as shadows and colours, and change fonts.

To add an effect to fields, click on the box you want to add the shadow to. Then click on the arrow next to the Special Effects icon on the Formatting toolbar and choose an effect.

Colours and fonts can also be changed from the Formatting toolbar. When you are happy with how your form looks, save it.

Task 3 Add data using a form.

The client, Time Machine, has given you some additional company details they forgot to include in the spreadsheet.

Open the document New customer details (Reso7c).

Use your form to add the new data, using the icon at the bottom of the form each time you want to add a new record (arrow ► / star *).

If you now go to your table, you will see that the new records have been added at the end of the table.

Task 4 Parameter queries.

A parameter query allows a user to type the criteria they are looking for into a search box to find the information they need.

Open the document Query design sheet (Reso7d) and reads what queries the client wants to perform on the data. Add your name to the name dialogue box. Save this into your Unit 9.3 Time Machine folder. Then fill in the table to show what fields you need to include, and what prompts to give the user.

Task 5 Create a parameter query.

Open the document Create a parameter query (Reso7e). This will take you through the steps of building this type of query.

Do this for each of the queries the client has asked you for, and save each query with a sensible name.

What is the difference between a simple query and a parameter query? Why is a parameter query useful in some cases?

Task 6 Database reports

You can create a report from a saved query. Click on Reports in the database window and choose Create report by using wizard.

The Report Wizard will take you through the steps you need to create a report.

When you click on Finish, your query will run, and you will need to type in the criteria you want the report to show. If you want to change the style of the report, click on Design View to change formatting elements.

Task 7 Evaluate your database.

You now need to evaluate your database against your original specification. Work in your groups. Look at your forms, run the queries and create a couple of reports together. Do the same for each member of the group. Decide between you on a least two things that work well ( 2 stars) and on one thing that needs improving (1 wish).

Then write up your evaluation, comparing your database with the specification.

Starter: Sprite to be munched worksheet

Task 1 – Creating and placing your sprites to be munched

Choose a sprite which is going to be eaten

Put it in your maze and resize it if necessary

Make sure you are clicked on your new sprite (you might want to rename it)

Add the script to make it disapppear

Now right click on thes sprite and choose duplicate – move your new sprite somewhere else in the maze.

Repeat this until you have 5 sprites in total

Task 2 – Setting a timer

You need to create a variable which shows you how much time it is taking to eat all your sprites.

A variable is something that stores information and can change (vary). Some questions to think about,

What value should the timer be at the start of the game?

How long should the wait be before the timer changes from 0 to 1?

How many times should this happen?

Your timer script needs to be written on the stage because it affects the whole game – make sure you click on the stage first.

Task 3 – Creating a variable to count how many sprites are munched.

Can you create a variable which counts how many sprites have been eaten and stops the game when they are all gone?

Task 1 – Updating your total revenue and costs

At the end of last lesson you added discounts and VAT to your model.

Change your revenue and costs formulas to use the new discounted prices and costs with VAT

Task 2 – Using goal seek further

Can you use goal seek to answer the following questions;

Make a note of your current profit – if VAT goes up to 22% what discount do you need to keep your profit the same?

Change your figures back to 10% discount and 20% VAT – what discount should you give to increase your profit by £500?

Task 3 – Creating and Using Charts

Using the data which can be found in Yourbands_Downloadable_Chart_Res4a.doc which is in the folder P:\Senior Pupils\ICT\Y08\Unit 8.4 Band Manager\Lesson_4, create a chart which shows the number of downloads last week for each band.

Task 4 – Making changes to your model

Now the band are doing so well you have decided to try and sell some extra merchandise at your concerts. Can you think of at least two extra things you could sell at your concerts? Programmes maybe…

Remember, you will need to buy your merchandise before you sell it so you will need to add rows in costs as well as revenue.

Task 5 – Formatting your sheet

Lots of help available here to assist you in making your sheet highly presentable using borders, shading and colours.

Extension

Can you format your profit and loss figure so that the cell changes colour if the profit goes above £1,000? Use this screencast to help you and test to see if it works by changing some of the variables. Can you use this technique on any other cells in your spreadsheet?

9.3 Lesson 7 Time Machine – Building Forms and Parameter Queries

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In today’s lesson you will learn how to;
